an triall- english translation: act one, scene one

music: 'siúil a ghrá'

Before the flag was raised the paper boy runs in

Boy: Evening paper. Terrible Tragedy. Evening Paper... paper...paper...tragedy... in the city

Máire: I killed my baby because it was a girl. Every girl grows up to be a woman. but my daughter is free. She's free. She won't be a fool for any man. she's free. she's free.

- boy running in

boy: Evening paper. Terrible Tragedy... paper... paper

The solicitor of the state comes in. He threatens the boy and he goes. They speak.

Solicitor 1: Your Honor, I ask you this- anything you have read and anything you have heard put it out of your head. Listnen to the evidence that I will give you. Give your judgement on this evidence and this evidence only. The prisonor that will be presented committed an awful crime. A murder is being presented- a damned ugly act, an act that needs revenge from god and from the people. She's a young girl and maybe you will feel pity for her but she did a damned awful act that one couldn't do in the presence of God or people. You can't let pity interupt your decision.

the flag is raised. the court is seen.

Clerk: Máire Ní Chathasaigh- called
voices

Máire comes. She stands in the witness box on the left

Clerk: Prisonor in front of the court, what do you say: guilty or not guilty?

voices: guilty or not guilty

Máire comes to the front of the stage and speaks with the audience

máire: I think that ye have information on all of the events but there are things that have been hidden from you  however the things hidden in my heart.. a certain name.. a name that has never been mentioned.. the night that started it.. the night of the dancing in the school hall. The music (dancing music can be heard). the song that I sang.
